Which Large- and Medium-Sized Mammals Use Commercial Short-Rotation Coppice as Habitat?

چکیده

Abstract We surveyed occurrence and activity of large- medium-sized mammals on six commercial mini-rotation short-rotation coppice (SRC) plantations in northern Germany by camera trapping different seasons (winter, late summer). In total, eleven species (6–9 per site) were detected. This corresponds to the majority mammal occurring study region. Roe deer, wild boar red fox found across all sites. All other detected fewer sites some only one seasons. deer was most active both terms visit frequency (days with detection) use intensity (detection numbers). With few exceptions individual sites, showed significantly lower activity. Number did not differ between Furthermore, there no differences near-edge central areas crops regard species. Activity however, differed considerably cases. Our results show that a wide range are basically able include SRC into their habitat utilisation. However, sporadic indicates rather limited current value plantations. Options increase for suggested, but effectiveness needs be tested future studies. Since spatial temporal scope our uniform age-class considered, immediately applicable landscapes, or types management phases SRC. Therefore, further research is required considers these aspects as well species-specific patterns selection comparison types.

Can we use short rotation coppice poplar for sugar based biorefinery feedstock? Bioconversion of 2-year-old poplar grown as short rotation coppice

BACKGROUND Feedstock cost is a substantial barrier to the commercialization of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Poplar grown using a short rotation coppice (SRC) system has the potential to provide a low-cost feedstock and economically viable sugar yields for fuels and chemicals production. In the coppice management regime, poplars are harvested after 2 years' growth to develop the root system an...

Status of Large and Medium-sized Mammals at JRBP

Status of Large and Medium-sized Mammals at JRBP Introduction Mammals are an important ecological component of all terrestrial ecosystems (Cole and Wilson 1996). As seed and fruit dispersers they are critical in determining the seed rain, germination potential and establishment of many plant species (Andresen 1999, Jansen et al. 2004). As flower visitors, some mammals, particularly bats and mar...

Can the agricultural AquaCrop model simulate water use and yield of a poplar short‐rotation coppice?

We calibrated and evaluated the agricultural model AquaCrop for the simulation of water use and yield of a short-rotation coppice (SRC) plantation with poplar (Populus) in East Flanders (Belgium) during the second and the third rotation (first 2 years only). Differences in crop development and growth during the course of the rotations were taken into account during the model calibration. Overal...

Evaluating ecosystem processes in willow short rotation coppice bioenergy plantations

Despite a growing body of research linking bioenergy cultivation to changing patterns of biodiversity, there has been remarkably little interest in how bioenergy plantations affect key ecosystem processes underpinning important ecosystem services. In this study, we compare how the processes of predation by ground arthropods and litter decomposition varied between Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) wi...
